Google says its AI features are built on its core Search ranking and quality systems, so the basics still apply: an indexable website with helpful, specific information, an accurate Google Business Profile, and a strong local reputation. On top of that, the businesses Google's AI names tend to state their services, location and credentials plainly.
Google's own guidance is that no special markup or separate 'AI content' is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. What helps is the same thing that helps people: clear pages that answer the questions customers ask, accurate business details, and evidence that you're trusted locally.
Google's AI and ChatGPT often disagree. In our 2026 study, the two engines frequently named different businesses for the same question, so being in one answer doesn't mean you're in the other. It's worth checking both.
Because the answers change, treat this as ongoing rather than a one-time fix: publish the facts, keep your listings consistent, and re-check the same questions on a schedule.
