Does ChatGPT recommend businesses that don't have a website?

Sometimes, but less often. ChatGPT can name a business it finds on directories and review sites even without a website. In our study of 3,343 Google Maps listings, about 28% of the businesses with no website on their listing were named by ChatGPT or Google's AI, against about 41% of those with one. A website gives the AI a source you control.

ChatGPT builds local answers from what it can find and confirm. A business with no site of its own can still show up through Yelp, industry directories and city "best of" lists, and in our Dallas–Fort Worth data some did. But every fact about it then comes from someone else's page, and if those pages disagree or go stale, the AI has nothing authoritative to check them against.

The numbers lean one way. Of the 143 listings in Google Maps' top 20 with no website attached, about 40 were named by at least one engine. Of the 3,200 with a website, about 1,320 were. Both groups include strong businesses, so the website isn't the only difference, but it's the one you can fix this week.

The site doesn't have to be big. What helps is a page that states what you do, where you do it, who it's for, and the details customers ask about, in words that match your Google Business Profile and directory listings. A homepage that only says "quality service since 1998" gives the AI very little to name you for.

Even a one-page site you control does more than none. Once it's up, Renownly's Sprint builds the AI-ready page for your main service on it from facts you approve, and gets your listings consistent, live in 10 business days.
