How does a personal injury or divorce lawyer get recommended by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT names the law firms it can confirm from several sources: practice areas and cities stated clearly on the firm's site, each attorney's bar admission and background, and matching profiles on legal directories such as Avvo, Justia and the State Bar of Texas. Strong reviews matter, but the AI also needs to read who your lawyers are.

In our 2026 study across 14 Dallas–Fort Worth cities, 43% of personal injury lawyers and 40% of divorce lawyers with 4.6+ stars and 60+ reviews were not named by ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode for "best [practice area] lawyer in [city]". In one city, a divorce firm with more than 4,600 reviews was left out while a lawyer with 44 was named.

Legal answers lean on directories more than most industries. Avvo creates a profile for every licensed attorney automatically, so the work is to claim and complete it, and the big legal directory networks share data, so fixing one profile often carries across several sites.

On your own site, give each attorney a page with their bar admissions, education and practice areas, and give each practice area its own page that names the cities you serve. Follow your bar's advertising rules, and don't publish client details in reviews or case results.
